11:10 am - Punch Buggy Rules Question

cookiethief
I know it's been a while since this community has been updated but thought I'd ask this just in case someone is still around checking posts...

I just purchased my first Beetle ('02 New Beetle GLS and we're in love already) but I'm trying to settle a discussion with a friend. Frankly neither of us knows what the answer is, but we're also in our early/mid 20s so haven't been playing this game quite as long as some other people... Now, assuming you're playing with people who count the New Beetle as punchable:

Does owning a bug exempt you from getting punched and if so, does it also exempt you from punching others upon seeing your own car? I mean, does your car become off limits much like the VW dealerships because, duh, of course it's going to be there, you own it... or does it not matter either way?

Some friends think that you're exempt from punching because it's yours, but you can still get punched because it's not theirs, but I hardly think that's fair. No one wants to be punished for buying the Greatest Car on Earth. Another friend says you get one punch for your car (so use it wisely) but friends still get unlimited hits.

Help! :)

11:44 pm - so, a couple of things.

birthdaycake
1. one or both of my headlights keep dying out, but i don't think it's the actual bulbs. i used to be able to just give them a small whack and they'd flip right back on (i'm completely aware that that's not the correct way to go about things), but no longer.

2. the bass in my sidedoors goes in and out (now mostly just out), so now the only sound that plays through the speakers is on the dashboard. there's no distortion, however, so i don't think i've blown them. maybe it's a loose connection or something?

how can i go about fixing these/anyone else have these problems? sorry for stupid questions.

10:29 am - My Bug's Restoration Website...

crazedvw
I've got a '73 Super Beetle I'm currently restoring following an engire fire back in 2004. I finally got around to building a website for it and wanted to introduce to everyone:

http://www.y73bug.com

In addition to the restoration part of it I've also scanned a small portion of my rather large collection of old Volkswagen ads and literature. (Look for it under Everything Else -> Literature and Ads) I'm currently in the process of scanning more and will be adding them in the coming days.

11:52 am - Manual transmission...

flowerpower1o1
I have a 2000 Volkswagen Beetle. Black. Standard. My one true love (I'd take a bullet for this car just to save the paint job). I've had it for four years and it's been fairly faithful.

This is a two part question.

FIRST: I've been noticing lately that I'm having trouble putting the car in third gear. It's like the gear is misaligned or something, because maybe three or four times out of ten the car just won't want to go into gear. I say it's the gearbox, my friend says it's a problem with the transmission as a whole. Has anybody had this problem before?

SECOND: That same friend and I argued about what RPM it's best to shift at. I say 3500 because Volkswagens are made to shift a little higher, he says I should be shifting between 2500-3000. Who's got it right?

HEY! I'm new here
I'm restoring a 74' super beetle
its in pretty bad shape
but it still drives
ANYWAY
I just got a new headliner for it and I was wondering if any of you have installed headliners before
maybe you could give me some advice before I embrak on this adventure

for instance
do I have to strip all the rubber or can I just use a putty knife and rubber cement?
and
should I apply a coat of glue before I install the headliner so it will stick before or would that be a bad idea?

3:26 pm - Introduction + Satellite Radio Antenna Question

donnyboy
Hello,

Name is Donny, my (new to me) 2004 convertible bug and I just joined the community.

My bug came with the Monsoon tape deck. I am considering yanking it out and installing an after-market cd/mp3/iPod/satellite-radio unit. I am going to use the XM Direct Connect kit that comes with a magnetic antenna. I am wondering where is the best/optimal place to put the antenna? I don't want it on the exterior of the car because she's too pretty. I am considering mounting the antenna on the dash. Do any of you with convertibles have the antenna on the dash and if so, is your reception OK? Other ideas of where to put the antenna?

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Donny

I was driving to school today and happened to look at my dash and noticed that I was going 0 mph except I was on the interstate and was going 60-70. When I got off the interstate I noticed that my gas gage goes down to half a tank when I accelerate and then back to nearly full (where it should be) when I'm stopped. My RPM gage is still work but my miles aren't moving.

I've checked the fuses and they're all ok. Is my dash just going out? Any ideas on what it'll cost to fix it?

So, yeah, I guess I'm looking for a new one. Anyone know what year the cup holders stopped sucking? And what year they stopped smelling like crayons? Mine was a 2001. So sad.

12:13 am - A/C Issue?

ragged_edges
Well, so I absolutely love Bella, my 2001 Beetle. She made from Urbana Illinois to Las Vegas Nevada AND back. She even made it through the mountains! If I had taken my old car it would have broken down before St Louis! Not to mention she was getting close to 30 miles per gallon :) I guess you can say we bonded during the trip.

Anyway, I'm really paranoid about any issues with my car... mostly because of previous cars and something ALWAYS going wrong with them. This month's paranoia with my Beetle is that the A/C is really noisy outside the car. Also, if I'm driving about 25 mph and turn on the A/C my car lags (its really noticeable - I'm not sure how else to describe it - something like being forced to shift down) I'm just wondering if someone else has experienced this. My dad says all cars do this but I'm not taking his word on it.

I'm sorry if this is a stupid question but I kind to be car paranoid / dumb.

Clutch burnt out at 75K on my 2000 Beetle. I believe I have 2K left on my warrenty. And I refuse to get it done at VW... well actually, if I do still have some space on my warrenty (30K/3 year got the car at I think 47K) It wouldn't matter if I took it to VW or not. Either way I'm paying $200 on the deductible. Then.. I'm home free. I wonder if brakes and Roat-erz would go on my warrenty... and if there's a way I can like... back track? Because I paid OVER 200 for those... Hmm. I doubt it. But it's worth a shot. I should have paid off my ded. anyways because headlights fall under the warrenty and I've had both replaced. I'll just see if I can get my whole last bill from VW on my warrenty.. I'd get like a hundred dollars back.

Anyone know? lol... It'd be awesome to be PAID to get my clutch replaced.

I don't even know if this entry makes sense. lol. Sorry if it doesnt.

Does anyone else feel like they go a lot? I try to reason with myself that even "new" cars have their issues, and the car is 7 in a half years old. And right on track mileage wise. I'm hoping after all this that I won't need to do anything for another 15-20K. Wishful thinking?

8:55 pm - about to get a beetle.

ayoria
hi i'm ari. i'm obviously new. i'm getting a 2004 VW new beetle gls on friday. my mom's best friend is moving out of the country and i'm taking over the payments..i just have a quick question...

my dad's mechanic is stuck on telling me time and time again that the transmissions on beetles are terrible. i've never seen one at his shop or anything like that. he said that the transmissions are like $900, but then again i know all transmissions are expensive. my question is if you have a beetle, what has been your experience with it? have you had any trouble? anything that cost a lot of money?

like i said this is a 2004 and it still has two more years to be paid on. it only has 34,500 miles on it so i'm thinking i really shouldn't be too worried about it since it barely has any miles.

if you have any thought regarding the transmission or anything else on the car, please let me know. thanks. :]

[EDIT]
btw, it's an automatic transmission and the car has been used mostly on the freeway then the street.

2:39 pm - Maintenance for convertibles

eicnan
I have a 2006 convertible - how often do you perform maintenance on your convertible top and what do you use? I know I could go to a detailer and have them treat the top but I was hoping there is a product I can purchase myself that works well.

My car is covered in dead bugs from a weekend road trip so right about now would be a good time for a good scrubbing, interior pollen cleaning and top maintenance (I just got the car a month ago, I haven't ignored the top for over a year).

11:32 pm - Call me crazy...

Hey, VWBugLovers!

I have 2001 Silver Beetle. And I'm wondering if anyone else has problems with the gas tank door? Basically the button works and I can hear it trying to open but it doesn't. I noticed a silver Beetle at school that also has to keep the gas door open but I don't know the year. I think it would be weird if this only was an issue with silver Beetles but it could happen.

Also, isn't there a way to open the gas door from the inside? I know it would probably be easier to just pay to get it fixed but I'm cheap (and curious) :)
